An “Irish American’s” Veiw Of The World.

An Expat in Paradise

The back yard

Well I’m officially an “expat in paradise”. Landed earlier this month from my summer siesta to Amsterdam and now I’m livin da life in Grand Cayman Island mon!

Getting here was a bit of a challenge but minor compared to the rewards. What beautiful people, warm friendly and polite. Grand Cayman is a quaint jewel in the British Crown. Located some 500 miles from Miami, it’s a short, hour long flight that takes you over Cuba and lands you in a diver’s nirvana. Billed as the third best dive location in the world, it’s a favorite location for divers from all points on the globe.

As I mentioned before the Caymanian people are laid back and friendly. Obviously this isn’t Europe or the US and some things are done a bit different, but the locals will generally go the extra mile to help and explain things. My apartment is on the South shore of the island directly on the water. Truly, a million dollar view. I snorkel 50 feet from the back patio in my own trillion gallon fish tank!

I will talk to you next time about the ease and availability of work for the expat community. I landed in paradise on my last dollar and now I’m making a great living and you can to! Many jobs are out there and I will share my experience in the hope it help someone like you looking to get out of Doge! Until next time keep the faith and make it great!

Regaining Respect Abroad

With a new US President about to be elected, the whole world is watching in anticipation. What many of us forget or don’t know is how important regaining respect abroad is. We cannot stand alone in the world and must regain the trust and respect America has always stood for if we are to regain the title world leader. Our example of greed and profit over honesty and integrity has made us suspect to the rest of a world that we have preached to for so many years.

This country is so much better than the crooks that run it now and we have a chance to prove it. As a country we can change history with our vote. So much of the world’s economy is tied to our own and how we act to resolve the current economic crises will have profound effects worldwide. That’s why it is important to get out and vote not just for a new President but all of the politicos that are up for reelections. If we don’t clean house now it may be too late.

In Europe earlier this year I was surprised to find the average Europeans knew more about our politics than the average American and were much more animated on the subject than most Americans I know. We have to stand up as a nation and become involved in our politics if we are ever going to change the pattern of greed and dishonesty that is US politics. I am tired of being yanked around every four to eight years by someone’s “new vision” of America.

There is only one vision and one direction America should have as stated in our constitution. Getting back to our roots and what we were founded on might be the “new direction” we should be going for. Wishful thinking probably, but with a lot more new Americans now voting we may be surprised. I hope so. Remember when our constitution was written it was done so by new Americans who were looking for a better life.

What happened to John McCain?

After making what has to be a shot from the hip decision to name Sara Palin as his running mate and now going on what can only be described as a witch hunt, the question begs to be asked, what happened to John McCain? With the country in the worst economic shape in its short history and embroiled in a war with no end in sight, the rhetoric as usual from our politicians isn’t going to cut it! Wake up John; we want to hear what you’re going to do for us, not how bad the other guy is.

Can you tell me without insulting someone else what YOUR plan is? Its bad enough we have to listen to Sara Palin read a teleprompter everyday without any hope of hearing something that wasn’t written for her. Come on John, what were you thinking? Did this come out of your bag of tricks, or one of the wonder kids you’re surrounded with? I don’t want to believe you really think she could run this country, so please tell me you cringe every time she opens her mouth.

I really believe you barked up the wrong tree this time John. The financial situation we find ourselves in has made us really think about who we want at the helm and the smoke and mirrors kind of answers we have come to expect during the elections are not going to go unnoticed. Could you please cut the crap and talk to us about your plan to bring our sons and daughters home from the war on oil in Iraq. Will you tell me how you will prevent the kind of failed policies your party has foisted on us for 8 years and the new road you see us traveling down?

I’m a former Marine and my youngest son just returned from Iraq and Afghanistan in the Air Force. My family believes in service and sacrifice for our way of life, but not in wasting one single life for a failed political agenda. So please don’t yank my crank Mr. McCain. Your angry rhetoric and running mate stunt aren’t enough this time. We honor your sacrifice in that other war we shouldn’t have been in, but question your honor in the way you are trying to gain our highest office.

You had a chance to stand out from the rest but instead mocked our intelligence and used fear and hate as your theme. Call me crazy but since that has been the Bush doctrine for the last 8 years maybe you could have tried something different. You’re done, baked, toast, should I go on?

Caribbean Sunset

With winter around the corner I thought a Caribbean sunset might stave off the chill for a bit. Even though I’ve lived most of my life in the tropics I never fail to be awe struck when the sun meets the ocean. Maybe it’s the mariner in me; some long ago journey across the expanse of an ocean that’s forever been imprinted in my soul. It might be the siren song of the oceans that draw us here, but drawn we are.

For some it’s the majesty of a mountain range that stirs their sole or the vastness and solitude of a forest. I love them all, but for me nothing compares to the pristine primitiveness of an ocean. All life started there, and must eventually end up there as well. The oceans are still a place we are not the masters and respect for it means life or death. The oceans still remain a place where men and women can take full measure of themselves as they attempt to traverse her ever changing faces.

When I stand long enough like tonight and watch the sunset, I can’t help to wonder about the people long gone to history that witnessed this very thing. Where were they? Who were they? The list must surely be long and full of adventure as I have imagined and much more I’m sure. That is why I will always live by the sea, for adventure is always near and the challenges never diminish. I’m sure when my ship sets sail for our last voyage and my soul is set free; it will do so, to a Caribbean sunset.
