An “Irish American’s” Veiw Of The World.

The Harley Flyer

I had to do a double take when I saw this small airplane painted in Harley Davidson, orange and black named the ” Harley Flyer”. The airplane was on a trailer hooked to a combination motor home/aircraft hanger when I rode up to this mobile airport.

While attending the Sturgis bike rally this past August, my riding buddy JD and I were at the Crazy Horse Memorial, near Custer South Dakota. We had just started to ride out of the parking lot when we saw this older guy with a long gray beard and black watch cap on, step out of his motor home. He looked like a guy ready to jump on his bike and roar up the road. He certainly didn’t look like the guy that welcomed me aboard my last airline flight.

We stopped and introduced ourselves. Tex, as he’s called by his friends turned out to be a really nice guy and was only too happy to talk about his flying sled he proudly calls the “Harley Flyer”. Retired and traveling to bike rally’s throughout the year, Tex has managed to combine his two loves, riding and flying. With only 75’ to 100’ of flat surface needed to take off and land, he rarely needs an airport. He told us to him, flying was like riding a Harley. It’s all about the freedom.

I’m glad I met Tex. He showed me again how life can be anything you can imagine. He was another of life’s example of people who found a way to be where they wanted, and to do what they dreamed. The how is not as important as the belief that every dream is possible, just ask Tex. He’ll be glad to tell ya.

Fear and Loathing in Right Wing Politics

I am constantly amazed at the religious right wing message of fear and loathing instead of peace and hope. At Thursdays Republican rallies in the Midwest I was not surprised by the mean hateful statements made by the crowd. One genius naming leading Democrats suggested they were to blame for all of our woe’s and demanded the Republicans throw them from office. What rock does this guy live under, or for that matter, the whole crowd.

I’m no political wiz, far from it, but I do see the nose in front of my face and I know who’s been in charge for the last 8 years. The proposals that the Republicans are whipping out of their hip pockets are the same band aid type solutions we have constantly received from the Republicans since, well, forever, and the thought of real change scares the crap out of them. Like most religious zealots, when you question them long enough, the sandy legs of their fantasy land crumble away, and they retreat to their armor of righteous indignity and predict gloom and doom!

I for one am tired of the fear spread by not only by the candidates but the media as well. As long as people remain in fear we will never stand as partners in success. Until we realize what all of our parts are, and start doing what needs to be done, we will repeat the cycle. The whole blame game reduces us all, and I am weary from it. It is in human nature to be afraid of change and associate pain with it, when usually it is painless and the results are more often than not wonderful!

Get over your self’s on the right. Instead of your misguided righteousness how about some of the love that you’re supposed to be about. Maybe then we can cross the divide and make the changes we need to make to survive in the 21st Century.

Sunset and Seafood in Grand Cayman Island

I’m sitting in the airport here in Grand Cayman Island, reflecting on my visit. I came for a job interview and a few days of R&R. The weather was rainy and the mid week tourist crowd was thin, but I was still able to see some of the sites eat some great seafood and witness a few spectacular sunsets. Of course landing a job was my reason for being there and staying focused was key. Getting the job is only half the battle, getting a work permit is the other and it is a fairly cumbersome process.

I do understand though, that with the many challenges most Caribbean nations face today, immigration, lack of resources, and the rampant spread of HIV, the need for careful screening is paramount. A physical and police back ground check are just a few of the requirements that are needed to obtain a work permit. Grand Cayman defiantly shines with the rewards of hosting one of, if not, the most successful offshore banking industries. You won’t see the poverty like you would in most Caribbean countries today.

I would also like to mention that the banking industry here is very regulated and unlike the common misconception, money laundering is not tolerated. The roads and other infrastructure are very modern and tower cranes sprinkle the skyline. There is a new feel to most of the Island and though business is brisk, there is still the laid back feel of the Islands. The financial crises gathering strength around the globe doesn’t seem to have made land fall here yet, but the folks here are concerned and watching the markets very closely.

So as I get ready to board my flight home I’m left to wonder what the Caymanians are doing right and the rest of the world doing wrong. I hope I can figure it out.

Oh yeah, I got the job!

Vice Presidential Debate Debacle

Are you kidding me! After last night’s debate debacle could anyone really consider Sarah Palin a viable vice president? I was left with a cold chill up my spine. Have we really sunk to the point where this is the best, most qualified candidate the republicans could find in the whole of the USA? We are indeed in trouble as a country when this is our best and brightest.

I’m not here to rant for any candidate. I’ve been on the fence for some time now, but no longer. After last night watching Sarah Palin avoid answering any direct questions and sound like a high school debater, could anyone vote for John McCain or Sarah “don’t have a clue” Palin? I have always had the utmost respect for John McCain and his sacrifice to this country, and had been seriously considering him for my vote.

Instead of picking a vice presidential candidate that would compliment a “both side of the aisle” kind of president, he has picked an extreme right wing, religious, gun toting, anti gay, hell, anti everything wacko! As the governor of probably the most environmentally sensitive state in the country, she promotes more drilling for oil in Alaska and off the shores of Florida. Are you freaking kidding me? In ten years when the first of that oil would trickle in, we will be far worse off, than if we had spent that time and money researching and developing alternate sources of energy.

More power for the vice president, is she nuts! If you thought Dick Chaney was a scary vice president, then this lady has gotta scare the crap out of you. She needs to brush up on the constitution, the few facts she quoted were mostly incorrect, but thats what you get when you spend your weekend being coached by Dick Chaney. Yeah thats what I want, a soccer mom running the most powerful country in the free world. I have to believe the very many educated woman in America last night, were wincing and cringing, watching that performance.

Please don’t tell me this selection had nothing to do with gender. Shock and awe, remember that catchy phrase? Well ladies and gentlemen this is political shock and awe at its best. I feel kind of sorry for Sarah, being thrown into an arena that most lions would run from, but have you ever heard the phrase, “thanks but no thanks”? Well life is all about choices right? So please America remember, television is not real and actors are, well actors, and when picking the folks that are going to lead our country, we want people that can at least speak to us without a script. Scarrrrry!
